Apprenticeship Program

The Saint John’s Abbey Organ Builders Apprenticeship Program is designed to equip aspiring organ builders with the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue a career in pipe organ building. This program has a unique combination of hands-on training with experienced professionals as well as classroom instruction. 

Pipe organ building is a highly specialized craft that integrates woodworking, metalworking, mechanics, acoustics, and artistry. Apprenticeship requires time, dedication, and a strong commitment. The program begins with a 3-month introductory trial period to allow candidates to discern if this is a true vocational path. After successful completion of the introductory period the 3-year apprenticeship is reviewed annually.

Over the course of the program apprentices will gain valuable experience in the following areas: 

  • Case Construction

  • Pipe Making 

  • Casting

  • Console and Mechanical Action

  • Wind Systems

  • Windchest Construction 

  • Maintenance 

This immersive learning experience is made possible through the support of Saint John’s Abbey and the generosity of donors passionate about passing this craft on to the next generation of organ builders. Apprentices receive a stipend, benefits, and room and board throughout their training.
